Are PYQs Enough for Exam Preparation?

No single resource is enough on its own, and PYQs are no exception. They are one of the most valuable tools in your preparation, but they work best as a layer on top of solid conceptual study — not as a replacement for it.
What PYQs Are Genuinely Good For
PYQs earn their reputation for good reason:
- Showing you exactly which topics carry real weightage, so you don't over-prepare low-yield areas
- Training you to read tricky, statement-based, or assertion-reasoning questions the way the exam actually asks them
- Building exam temperament — timing, elimination technique, and deciding when to skip a question
- Giving you an honest benchmark of where your preparation currently stands
Where PYQs Fall Short
They also have clear limits:
- Current affairs and recent developments — PYQs are, by definition, about the past
- Conceptual foundations — PYQs test concepts, they rarely explain them from scratch
- Newly added or evolving syllabus areas that haven't been tested much yet
- Descriptive skills for Mains-type exams, such as structuring an answer or essay writing
A Balanced Approach That Works
The aspirants who do well typically follow a layered strategy: build concepts first (NCERTs and standard reference books), stay current with daily news and monthly compilations, and use PYQs continuously — as a pattern-recognition tool early on, and as a revision and mock-test tool closer to the exam.
Think of PYQs as the sharpest lens for focusing your effort, not the only source you study from.
